On the Seventh Day of Christmas…

We are delving into Santa’s sack again today and we’ve pulled out another gift for you.

Another inspirational book for you – Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable.

This book is written by Seth Godin.

Seth is one of my all-time favourite marketing gurus and he has released another book – This is Marketing – that has already gone to New York Times bestseller status and will be one that I will spend reading over the Christmas holidays!

His personal belief is that creative advertising is less effective today because of the clutter and sameness of businesses and its advertising thinking.

The book challenges businesses to produce remarkable products/services and target people who are likely to spread word of mouth about them.

USA Today said it “reminds business people of the tried-and-true path to success: Make a great product”.

The book consists of general ideas interspersed with examples.

The argument starts with the presumption that advertising is less effective than it has been, and that the only way now to gain attention in a market is to not only market a product in a remarkable manner, but also to have a remarkable product to market.

Seth gives examples of products and marketing programs that have been remarkable, but indicates that it is no use copying these directly.

He says, “Today, the one sure way to fail is to be boring. Your one chance for success is to be remarkable.” I’ll go one step further and say ‘be inspirational!’

Nonetheless, the book ends with a Ten Point Checklist that sets out how to create a remarkable product/service.

Dare to be different and you will succeed or to quote the voice in “Field of Dreams” – If you build it, they will come!

Have a great day!
